IBSA Grants Recognised International Federation Status to Inclusive Skating

Inclusive Skating announces that the Executive Board of the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) has approved the granting of Recognised International Federation (RIF) status to Inclusive Skating.

The decision, adopted on 26 February 2026 under the IBSA Policy on Cooperation with International Federations, establishes a formal institutional framework for cooperation between IBSA and Inclusive Skating.

The RIF designation confirms official recognition and creates a partnership-based model of cooperation. It does not constitute IBSA membership and does not confer governance or voting rights within IBSA.

Under the decision, the IBSA President is authorised to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between IBSA and Inclusive Skating International, providing the basis for collaboration in areas including:

This recognition strengthens the international pathway for blind and visually impaired skaters and supports the continued expansion of inclusive skating structures worldwide.

Inclusive Skating is simultaneously developing a broader licensed framework accessible to disability sport organisations globally, including cooperation with Virtus (intellectual impairment) and developing engagement with World Ability Sport (physical disabilities).

The organisation is pursuing a long-term development strategy that includes potential future exploration of Paralympic participation, while maintaining independent World Championships and structured pathways for athletes who may not meet Paralympic eligibility criteria.

Margarita Sweeney Baird BEM, Founder of Inclusive Skating, said:

“We are grateful to IBSA for granting Recognised International Federation status. This establishes a clear framework for cooperation and strengthens opportunities for blind and visually impaired athletes internationally, while preserving inclusive pathways for all.”

Further information will follow upon formal signature of the Memorandum of Understanding.
