World Ice Skating Day Breaks Boundaries across Disability and Age

PRESS RELEASE

ISSUED: 15TH December 2024

For Immediate Release

Inclusive Skating is excited to celebrate this year’s ISU World Ice Skating Day! This third year of global skating festivities included our annual IS World Virtual Championships. This year saw participation from skaters in all disciplines with many skaters scoring personal bests and many new participants. We were also thrilled to welcome skaters from previously unrepresented countries. Skaters from across Europe, the Americas, Oceania, and Asia brought home medals to their home countries for the first time, including the first ever skaters to represent Indonesia, China and Saudi Arabia in international IS competition! With almost 250 videos submitted for evaluation, this year matched our previous participation records.

Skaters submitted video competition entries in singles, pairs, ice dance, pattern dance, rhythm dance, solo free dance, figures, synchro teams, synchro duets, compulsory elements, free-skating elements, and theatre on ice competition events! The judging panel was impressed by the improved quality and difficulty of attempted elements across the events. “It was a pleasure to see the skaters attempting more difficult elements, whether that was a harder jump, new turns, or just attacking their programs with more speed and commitment . This is a testament to significant training and dedication from the skaters as well as effort from the coaches”. – one of the judges opined.

This year welcomed a record number of adult skaters demonstrating a diversity in age in our sport. Adult skaters and young skaters both commented on their respect for one another, and admiration for their shared experiences. We would like to extend a huge thank you to every skater who participated in this year’s event, as well as every family member and parent who supports the skaters' dreams, every coach who instils the skills the skaters need to succeed, and all the volunteers, judges, results officials, trustees, and support staff who help make the delivery of events like this possible.

We wish skaters around the world a happy holiday season and a happy new year. We look forward to welcoming you all to our events in 2024 including our national championship series, British Open, and World Championships 2025!
