Torvill and Dean were surprise Presenters at the Virtual Inclusive Skating British International Championships on 9 January 2021
A combination of stunned silence and gasps of surprise welcomed Jayne and Chris when they appeared together on Zoom for the presentation ceremony on Saturday evening. Forty medal recipients and participants from seven different countries including Australia, came together without knowing who the surprise guests were. The skaters and their families, together with Inclusive Skating coaches, judges and volunteers had gathered for the presentation following the championships which had been held virtually in December. Everyone cheered when they realised that Torvill and Dean were joining in the celebrations.
A short video clip was shown of each skater as they were introduced. Many skaters had managed to access some ice last year but many had not, so a new category of off-ice elements and programme had been included. Jayne and Chris then read out each commendation and personally congratulated the recipients. They also chatted with attendees and pointed out that many elements are in fact harder off the ice rather than on, so this additional category was really encouraging to see.
A lively and most enjoyable evening marked the successful efforts that all our skaters have made during the last very challenging year.
An extended programme of virtual activities and training is now in place for 2021.
Inclusive Skating provides a blended model of delivery using Virtual and Venue based activities for those who need a bit of extra help to access skating. Activities include training, learning resources, badge program, clubs, competitions, volunteer, coaching and support services.
